I’ve been working toward obtaining the Occupational Journalism Certificate since early 2007. After spending three semesters on an ill-suited major, I came to Paradise Valley Community College to pursue a greater passion–journalism.
In my first semester at PVCC, I took three journalism classes and served as the photo editor on the school’s Puma Press newspaper. For the spring 2009 semester, I became the first-ever Web editor for the Puma Press. With the help of Web Master Marc Varner, we were able to launch a student-run Web publication of the newspaper–the first in Puma Press history.
I continued the Web editorship through the fall 2009 semester. As Web editor, I have learned how to post content, photos and even video to the Web. With the ease of Web publication, our newspaper staff has been able to post between our monthly paper deadlines and keep up on timely issues. My valuable time as Web editor has provided me with countless skills and has helped shape me as a multi-media journalist.
In addition to the required classes at PVCC, an internship at Phoenix Woman magazine has aided in making me a more valuable multi-media journalist. Through copy-editing, writing and posting content to several Web areas (including the online publication, blogs and events calendar), I have sharpened my senses and my eye for detail.
My goal is to excel as a journalist, and to one day take it a step further and become a photojournalist. One dream of mine to is to one day work for Arizona Highways magazine. Earning the Occupational Journalism Certificate is one step in realizing my goals.
Thank you for taking the time to review my portfolio.
